Accreditation

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office received international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc (CALEA) on November 21, 2015.  The Sheriff's Office is one of only six law enforcement agencies in the State of Maine to be accredited by CALEA.  On November 21, 2019, Cumberland County SO completed a four-year re-accreditation cycle and was re-accredited by CALEA.  CCSO is one of only 772 agencies in the country to currently hold the Law Enforcement Accreditation status.

Accreditation is a continuous process that includes demonstrating compliance with national standards and best practices through an annual review process, culminating in an on-site assessment by CALEA personnel once every four years.  During annual reviews and the on-site assessment, experienced public safety practitioners examine all aspects of the Sheriff's Office including policies and procedures, management, operations, training, and support services.  The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is scheduled for our next on-site assessment in June of 2023.

In support of the accreditation process, CALEA maintains an access portal that allows for comment and feedback with regard to candidate agencies seeking initial accreditation or reaccreditation status. This portal access is provided as an opportunity for comments, commendations, and other information regarding the agency's quality of service or other information relevant to the accreditation process.  The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Accreditation Public Comment Portal can be found at the link below.
